About 11 years ago this album called Gorillaz came out. I remember being 14 years old, watching the Clint Eastwood video on MTV and I remember it being the 1st time I listened to and actually enjoyed rap. Since then my hip-hop arsenal has been substantially more fleshed out, and before I get started, I’d like to thank Gorillaz for getting me into it.
So I think Damon Albarn is a musical magician. Is it just me, or has it been the case for any of you that when you 1st listen to a Gorillaz album it’s a bit disappointing? BUT THEN!, all of a sudden you’re giving it another try and you realize “This is the most awesome thing I have ever heard.”
With the 1st listen of Gorillaz, I didn’t like any of the other songs and now it’s one of my favorite albums.
With the 1st listen of Demon Days, I didn’t like how different it was from Gorillaz and now it’s one of my favorite albums.
With the 1st listen of Plastic Beach, it didn’t work for me and now I love it.
And now the new single with Andre 3000, I didn’t like it at first and now I think it jams. (the references in the music video are great btw, especially the little taste of “5/4” at the end.)
Anyway, in hindsight, I can’t understand what I didn’t like about the songs.
Again, Damon Albarn is a magician, yes?
P.S. Listen to “Every Planet We Reach Is Dead” right this instant. The strings and piano work in it are brilliant!
